How Does Nepal Development Marketplace Work?

The objective of Nepal Development Marketplace (NDM) 2008 is to harvest the most innovative ideas in development from around the country. The NDM also brings together a variety of actors in development to promote knowledge sharing and help form networks. The goal of NDM is to expose and engage the development community in productive and inventive partnerships that will try new approaches and offer high potential impact in poverty reduction and economic development. The NDM goes through the following steps:

Call for Proposals
The announcement for the competition will be kicked off with a "Call for Proposals" in early March 2008. Incoming proposals should be short and include information about the project idea and implementation plan, what makes it innovative, an overall budget outline, and the proposed partners. All proposals must meet the eligibility criteria and be received by April 30, 2008, after which a review process (described below), will select approximately 50 finalists who will be requested to submit detailed proposals from June 02 - 16, 2008. These proposals should describe a more comprehensive business and implementation plan with detailed budget. Finalists will be invited to participate at the national competition to be held in Kathmandu on June 24, 2008

Review of Proposals – Selection of Finalists
Incoming proposals that meet the NDM's eligibility criteria will be reviewed by a group of technical experts. Proposals will be evaluated against a set of assessment criteria. Roughly 50 finalists will be invited to submit a longer proposal and attend the national competition.

Review of Finalist Proposals – Selection of Winners
At the NDM competition, 50 finalists will be displaying their proposed projects to general public and panel of independent jury. Panel of independent jury will evaluate each proposal and will conduct a public interview with each finalist team. At the end of the event on June 24, 2008, the jury will select approximately 25 winners who will receive funding for their projects.

Knowledge Forum
To take advantage of the rich gathering of development actors, NDM 2008 will convene a Knowledge Forum that will engage the participants in inventive partnerships, networks, and opportunities for discussion of the key challenges facing development entrepreneurs.

Project Implementation
Winners will sign a project agreement that indicates how and when the award money will be disbursed to them. The Poverty Alleviation Fund, Nepal will monitor project performance, marshal technical assistance, if necessary, and help disseminate lessons learnt to the broader development community.
